FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Government workers and retirees are calling for full funding for Kentucky's pension system that faces a $33 billion unfunded liability.

Scores of people gathered at the Capitol on Thursday for a boisterous rally to make their position clear to lawmakers.

Boone County school bus driver Helen Cottongim said government workers deserve financial security in retirement after a lifetime of service.

Lawmakers are looking for a way to pay down the unfunded liability in the pension system. A legislative task force that spent months studying the issue recommended pumping in more money without saying where the money would come from.

The Kentucky Public Pension Coalition, a group of government workers, retirees and advocates, has been lobbying lawmakers not to make wholesale changes to the pension system.
