CVS Health-Aetna will lay off 313 people, beginning in April. The decision impacts 151 employees at Aetna's headquarters in Hartford, Conn., with the rest of the impacted employees being remote workers (mostly from outside of Connecticut). The layoffs are expected to continue through the end of July.

The news broke in the form of a letter dated Feb. 4 and sent jointly via email to the Connecticut Department of Labor and Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam from Jennifer Bailey, CVS Health's executive director of colleague relations. "This action is expected to be permanent," wrote Bailey, who attributed the layoffs to "the result of operational changes in CVS Health Aetna's Small Group business segment."

As the Hartford Courant reports:

The layoffs … are the eighth round since the health care giant made a sweeping announcement in September 2024 focusing on job cuts. CVS said it planned to slash 2,900 corporate jobs nationwide over the next few years, as it struggled with rising medical costs and would shift to its core, or mainstay, businesses.

Since that announcement, 1,046 locally-connected jobs — a mix of those working in Hartford or those reporting to the Aetna headquarters in the city — have been targeted for layoffs. An analysis of the notices filed with the state labor department show[s] about 12%, or 130, were Connecticut residents.

According to Aetna, CVS Health employs approximately 300,000 people nationwide.
