The White House is cracking down on drugmakers that have raised the costs of their medications faster that the rate of inflation – another move in a series of price-fighting measures being rolled out under the Inflation Reduction Act.

The pharmacy chain and the insurer have been in a dispute since 2019 over Walgreens' pharmacy savings club, which charged the underinsured lower drug prices but allegedly billed Humana the standard rates.

Although Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the plan into law in 2019, it required federal review and approval by the FDA.

Cancer patients received letters from the prestigious Manhattan hospital in December claiming the insurer would soon drop their coverage, but there is now a tentative agreement in place to provide coverage through April 14.

The FDA has authorized roughly two dozen AI products to help diagnose cancer from mammograms, which are being rolled out in different states. However, patients must pay an extra fee – often $40 – for the AI analysis.

A group of 19 senators sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to rethink its appeal of a recent court decision permitting the use of copay accumulator programs that help patients pay for their drugs.
