World Cup fever has taken over the U.S. in recent days, prompting some employers — even those with the most hardline approach to in-office work — to lean into flexibility.

In a memo announcing the news, Amy Coleman, Microsoft's executive vice president and chief people officer, seemingly couched the retirement offer as an alternative to a layoff, following several rounds of cuts that claimed 15,000 jobs over the last year.

"The reclassification of errors raises the stakes of inspections in an already aggressive enforcement environment," wrote attorneys from employment law firm Littler on the update.

Of the 600 HR professionals whose organizations laid employees off over the last year to make way for the influence of AI, about two-thirds had already rehired some of those employees.

With conditions like autism, ADHD or anxiety disorders, however, the accommodations are often more related to how work itself is structured, the ways in which information is communicated and the social interactions expected.

The settlement includes the stipulation that "this agreement is neither an admission of liability by IBM ⁠nor a concession by the United States that its claims are not well-founded."

In a letter to staff, CEO Evan Spiegal said rapid AI advances have enabled Snap teams to "reduce repetitive work, increase velocity and better support our community, partners and advertisers."

"Affordability now outweighs nearly every other factor in benefits decision-making," ADP researchers write in the ADP TotalSource® Employee Benefits Survey.
